As I’ve expressed before, I have a big weakness for monochromatic looks. And, if you couldn’t tell from the photos, I’m really feeling the blues today. Known to many as the Canadian tuxedo, I am sporting a denim look with my Zara shirt and Paige jeans. All together this outfit takes on two big trends of the past few seasons (monochromatic and denim-on-denim) to make for a flattering and stylish look. Next time you’re getting dressed, experiment with your color palette. You might just surprise yourself with an awesome, and unexpected, monochromatic outfit!

When choosing an outfit for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, I struggled a bit with the balance of sexy and classy……a combo which is difficult to pull off! I ended up choosing a denim Rag & Bone button down top with leather trim, and my favorite leather shorts. In order to amp up my somewhat “conservative” outfit, I chose my knee-high, suede, Calvin Klein boots. Because, as we all know, there is a difference between looking attractive and stylish according to our fellow females, and sporting a “hot” outfit for the men in our lives. By accentuating my legs and remaining more conservative on top, I was able to master the male appeal and the female style I always aim for!
Making their second debut in my short lifetime, boyfriend jeans are back. Although I find them to be a great look when styled the right way, I don't find their price to be equally appealing. When spending money on a fashion trend, I try not to invest unless it's something I see lasting for more than two seasons. The jeans pictured above are a moderately priced boyfriend distressed look from GAP. I typically am one to invest in my denim, but when it comes to the boyfriend style, I wasn't prepared to spend over $100 for something I knew I wouldn't be wearing for long. So far, I am enjoying the quality and wash of these GAP jeans, and I'm especially loving the price tag!
He's done it again. Elie Saab is a genius, and if you can't see why from these photos, then I fear for your fashion sense. His colour palette is consistently impeccable, lines are always flattering to the female body, and his fabric choices are luxurious and wearable. There is not a single piece from his Fall 2014 RTW collection which didn't make me weak in the knees. I urge you to check out his full collection here: http://www.wwd.com/runway/fall-ready-to-wear-2014/review/elie-saab. Prepare to be amazed!
Unless you live in one of the few regions of the world where snow is nothing more than an image on TV, suede shoes should not be a part of your “winter” wardrobe as specified by outdated fashion codes. As a delicate material, suede has no place being worn on our feet through snow, salt, and the eventual slush that makes up most winters. I don’t care how many products claim to protect against the cruel actions of Mother Nature, there is nothing that will keep your shoes alive in these conditions. In my closet I currently have 4 pairs of beautiful suede “winter” boots, which have yet to see the outdoors, and won’t be doing so until I am assured this polar vortex has concluded. So, as a protest to the harsh treatment of suede shoes everywhere, I am now adopting this as a summer style and ending the cruelty we have been imposing for years. I hope you will all see the light and join me on my fashion quest ;)
Shorts. Most often associated with warm weather, shorts are a year round staple in my wardrobe. Whether it be with tights or bare legs, I find shorts to be a comfortable fashion statement that can be dressed up and down. Today I chose BCBG shorts with my boyfriends Diesel long sleeve shirt to contrast the tight fitting bottoms. To keep my legs warm without tights, I wore my knee-highs and suede Stuart Weitzman booties (these were for style, not so much for function!). Finally, I topped off the all black look with several gold accessories.
Stay tuned for more of my favorite black and gold ensembles! Guilty. The distressed trend has come and gone several times in the past few years, but I still find myself adding new pieces to my collection. My favourite way to style this look is with tailored fashion items, giving the outfit a semi-grunge look (without appearing entirely homeless). Maintaining balance is a good way to wear more fashionable/trendy styles, without overwhelming your outfit. One pairing I love is boyfriend jeans with tailored blazers and pumps. Nothing has excited me recently as much as the return of overalls...especially in leather. What can be considered the original "romper," overalls are a funky fashion item that can be dressed up, or down, depending on your mood. This leather pair looks incredibly stylish when paired with a cropped black tee, suede wedges, and of course, fabulous accessories. In addition to the overalls, my other obsession is also an old favourite, the backpack! The backpack featured in the spread above is McQueen, and exists only in my dreams. However, there are several affordable options on the market now for those of us who don't have $2,000 to spare! Last, but not least, is the incredible Nala coat by DVF. I'm absolutely loving the ombre style and the incredibly rich colour palette utilized. An oversized coat is a must have for everyone's wardrobe, and they are available at every price point. At first glance, this Chanel ring is a fun and whimsical addition to any outfit. However, this ring holds much greater meaning than what is on the surface. Given to me as a gift by my grandma, this ring symbolizes both our love for each other and my first taste of designer fashion. I have loved Chanel since the day I first learned about Coco and Karl. But as a 24 year old student, high end luxury is not something I can necessarily afford. This piece of costume jewelry gave me a little taste of high fashion, and the life I strive to live. My ring is a symbol of the path I was destined to take and my love for the fashion industry. I thank my grandma for giving me the key to my future, and Chanel for being forever fabulous! Although my typical outfit is similar to a Bloomies uniform, I decided to add a pop of color today for my interview. This Club Monaco silk scarf is a must have for people like me who need accent pieces to spice up their wardrobe. Luckily interview apparel no longer has to be drab, especially in the fashion industry. I was able to rock my many black and gold rings, as well as a stretch pant and booties. I guess my take on the new interview style worked because I got the job ;) |
